Legendary 16-bit title Another World (aka Out of this World) is set to head for iOS devices as Eric Chahi, the visionary behind the groundbreaking title announces that DotEmu will be developing a version for Apple mobile devices.
Now 20 years old, Another World is remembered for its pioneering and highly stylized vector graphics and animation and is fondly remembered as one of the greatest, most unusual titles of its era.
The last 20 years haven’t been quiet for Another World, however – it has been released on over a dozen platforms, from the original Amiga to 3DO, Mac and even Windows Mobile – and it has attained cult status amongst critics and fans, proving to be a favourite among sophisticated gamers for its cinematic effects in the graphics, sound and cut scenes.
Eric Chahi is said to be impressed with the development of the title for iPad, and it would seem the job is in good hands; DotEmu have previously ported several classics to iOS devices, notably popular retro shoot-em-up R-Type.
If you’re unfamiliar with any of the game titles mentioned so far, you’re probably a bit young to recall them – but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. An influence on Half Life, Another World chronicles the story of a young scientist hurtled through space and time by a nuclear experiment that goes wrong. You assume the role of Lester Knight Chaykin who has to dodge, outwit, and overcome the host of alien monsters and deadly earthquakes that plague the alien landscape he finds himself occupying, where only a blend of logic and skill will get Lester past the deadly obstacles that lie in wait.
