LG Electronics has confirmed that it will release a tablet PC running on Google’s Android OS, in the fourth quarter of 2010. The company has also said that an Android 2.2 update for its Optimus Z smartphone will be released at the same time.
A new version of the Optimus Z handset preloaded with version 2.2 of Android OS is also being planned by the company. The Optimus Z has a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm and a 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 800×480 pixels. It has a 5 megapixel camera in its back and is equipped with Bluetooth and GPS as well.
LG has already been working to launch its UX10 tablet PC that runs on the Windows 7 OS. The company’s Android tablets plans could have been fuelled by the growing popularity of Google’s mobile operating system as well as its rival Samsung’s announcement of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab tablet computer powered by Android.
However, LG has not revealed the pricing, the intended markets or the specifications of its planned Android tablet.
